Top three trends to bring your dream decor to life
With 'design' in it purest form being inherently objective, harnessing key interior decor trends to make them your own is really where the magic happens when it comes to designing your dream spaces. Here, we look at three top design trends that work to create a more modern decor, and how you can take inspiration from them...
Scandi Style
We’re all guilty of watching moody Nordic Noir crime dramas on Netflix, but if you've spent more time staring enviously at the interior design instead of being wrapped up in the plot twist you are far from alone. There is just something oh so cool about the scandi's use of tones, minimalist furniture and natural textures. Effortlessly chic and evocative, and yet somehow quite warming and homely too.
Scandi style is without doubt one of the most talked about and aspirational interior design styles doing the rounds again. In other words; the epitome of modern living. It's nothing new, IKEA has made a very profitable business out of it and for good reason, but what we are seeing more of is that while there is certainly an aesthetic there to aspire to, there are no set rules to follow - making Scandi-style one that is incredibly accessible.
If you're in search of an authentic feel though, there are certain aspects which should be considered. The most critical part is the colour palette; cool tones of white and grey are a must. Colours which of course can be applied to your flooring and profile products. For a truly individual look, the Weatherbar team - which specialises in bespoke finishes - would opt for a grey base with a whitewash in the grain to add a depth not normally seen in flooring and profiles.
If you’re concerned that everything is feeling too cold, don’t despair, this is where the Scandinavians really know their stuff. The whole room can be lifted with the clever use of natural textures and fibers across soft furnishings. Cushions, throws and rugs are usually used to add a touch of warmth, alongside naturally finished/exposed timber furniture; another simple way of adding warmth (and interest) to the room.
Let's Talk Texture
Turn back the years to the early days in the wood flooring boom and the market was inundated with ultra smooth and incredibly polished floors. Particularly popular were the lighter Beech, Maple and Ash finishes imported from Scandinavia and Northern America. Fast forward to current day and the market has been through many fashion ups and downs, which have led us to a bit of a crossroads currently.
Those pale finishes are still prominent but additionally we’ve also seen a shift towards rich, mid-dark brown tones on textured flooring no less. While it would be easy to attribute the texture of the floor purely to how it feels under foot, there is a lot more to it when it comes to colour.
Texture options impact how colour is applied and how it appears, both on flooring and any additional products that are required to match it. As a general rule, the more heavily textured the flooring, the deeper and more intense the coloured aspects will appear. This is particularly prevalent when applying a light coloured oil over the top of a dark base coat.
When considering the texture of your floor, and hardwood profile products, it’s vitally important to think about your colour scheme first. If you’re looking for cool whites and greys, stick with sanded and brushed surfaces to keep some consistency in the colour and a bit of interest within the grain. If you fancy something deep, dark and dramatic, go with mid-dark browns with a distressed surface and clear or dark oil top coats. This will keep the colours from becoming too complex, while adding fantastic depth to the floor.
Keeping it Clean
When it comes specifically to hardwood profiles and trim, clean, simple lines have been huge for 2024. With a focus on functionality, homeowners and designers opted for sleek, unembellished wood trim to blend seamlessly with the walls and overall decor.
Minimalistic skirting boards with straight, simple lines should be your hallmark for creating a modern interior. Painted in the same color as the walls or a shade slightly lighter or darker, you can create a seamless transition between walls and floors.
For a cohesive look, door and window casings too can be matched to your skirting boards to continue those simple, clean lines, to create a a crisp, professional appearance.
