MDF Scotia beading is a fast and cost effective solution to covering the perimeter expansion gaps required when fitting a laminate style floor. Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood waste into wood fibre and combining it with wax and a resin binder to form panels using high temperature and pressure. These panels can then be moulded like hardwood or softwood in to shapes. MDF is often wrapped in a foil paper or sold primed, ready to be painted.
In an attempt to reduce our carbon footprint and be as environmentally friendly as possible, we collect all of our chippings and sawdust to make in to briquettes.
These briquettes are then sold or used to heat our factory during the winter!
Sadly, we live in a world where the origin of some timber (particularly hardwoods) cannot always be verified. Especially exotic hardwood that comes in to the UK from the Far East, South America & Africa.
Deforestation and the illegal harvesting of timber is a serious issue and should be a concern to everyone as the stewards of our planet. This is the reason we take such a hard stance on the origin of the timber materials we use.
Through the various industrial bodies that are available, we strive to ensure all of the timber we use has been removed from forests and woodland in a responsible and ethical manner. That way we can pass on peace of mind to our customers that everything you buy from us is sustainable and certified.
Minimal preparation, beautiful finish. Fix & forget philosophy, walk away without worry of having to return to replace or repair our products.
Tools you'll need for the job:
Weatherbar Scotia profiles are quick and easy to fit if you follow our method for getting it right first time around. Ensure that your working area is clean from dust and debris, ideally when sticking the profile down the surface needs to be as clean and flat as possible. Double check your perimeter expansion gaps aren't too wide for the scotia or beading that you have selected. If using with skirting, make sure the scotia or beading is fixed to the skirting rather than the floor. This will allow any movement of the flooring to occur without displacing your beading!
Our initial recommended starting point for any DIY is to ALWAYS measure and measure again. Even the most experienced DIYers and tradespeople make errors at this stage and it's such an easy thing to overlook!
Start with a clean and debris free substrate floor. This will allow for the high grab adhesive to bond with the skirting/wall and profile. Once dust free and you're happy with the position the profile needs to sit, apply a bead of high grab adhesive to the back of the beading. If using pins, ensure there are no wires or pipes behind the skirting and double check the nail length is long enough but not too long!
If you using adhesive, apply to the back of the profile where the beading will touch the skirting/wall and push in to place. Try to keep some pressure on the beading until the adhesive has grabbed. If using pins/nails as well, make sure that you direct them slightly downwards when knocking them in. This will reduce the chance of splitting and/or becoming visible if started too close to the top.
When fixed, the scotia beading should be attached to the skirting or wall and sat on top of the floor. The beading should be flat and square without any gap between the floor or skirting. This will help prevent dust and debris building up between the floor and beading.
